6.MAIN RESEARCH AREAS
Regional Geography; seaport and maritime transportation geography; ocean and coastal geography; urban geography; epistemology of inter-disciplinarity.
6.1 Regional geography. Being the occupant of the first chair of regional geography in the Italian University system, since the early 1970s A. Vallega has been carrying out both (i) theoretical research on the region and regionalisation, and (ii) investigations on coastal regions. In 1976 he proposed linking the Vidal de la Blache's thought, i.e. the classical theoretical approach to the region, with the general system theory. In 1982, a general system-based approach to the region and regionalisation was presented. In 1994 the shift from the general system- to the complexity-based epistemology was presented as the scientific approach consistent with the need to build up sustainable development-aimed regional policies. In 1999 he begun carrying out investigations on the shift from modern to post-modern societies.

1995 La regione, sistema territoriale sostenibile
6.2 Seaport and maritime transportation geography. In the framework of the investigations on Mediterranean coastal regions, during the 1970s and 1980s A. Vallega carried out investigations on the seaports, maritime navigation and transportation. Moving from the conceptual approach by A. Vigarié on the spatial interaction between cityports, hinterlands and forelands, a view of the evolution of the trio "city, ports and transportation", framed in a stage-based historical perspective, was presented in 1980 and implemented in 1997. Maritime transportation, seaport and coastal regions have been dealt with aqs integrated spatial structures the development of which may be framed in stage-based views.

1980 Per una geografia del mare. Trasporti marittimi e rivoluzioni
1997 Geografia delle strategie marittime. Dal mondo dei mercanti alla società transindustriale
6.3 Ocean geography. In the early 1980s investigations on seaports and maritime transportation led A. Vallega to designing stage-based constructivist approaches to the interaction between human communities and the ocean. A decade after, a systematic view of the ocean was presented basing it on the general system approach (1992) and the sustainable development concept (1994). This research area was basically implemented in the framework of the International Geographical Union (see Section 7.2). Afterwards efforts have been made to design global views of ocean governance and relevant educational approaches.

6.4 Epistemology. Efforts have been concentrated on the external epistemology of geography and its conceptual backgrounds. Within this framework the prospect of transcending both positivist- and structuralism-supported geographical concept building, and that of adopting constructivist, complexity-based views, have been carried out. This approach led A. Vallega to focusing on the epistemological issues concerned with inter-disciplinarity. This subject has been dealt with in the 1990s assuming the ocean sciences as a potential arena for discussion of concepts and methods. In 1998 investigations on the role of comple(xity-based epistemology and post-modernist approaches have been initiated.
Basic books in the field (for details see Table 8)
1991 Esistenza, società, ecosistema. Pensiero geografico e questione ambientale
6.5 Human geography. Efforts for providing views of human geography, essentially for educational purposes, have been made.

1989 Geografia umana
1999 Introduzione alla geografia umana
6.6 Intersecting subject areas. Both the approaches to regional geography (Section 6.1) and ocean geography (Section 6.3) have been implemented assuming the global change and the sustainable development as the scientific and political reference concepts. Also the geographical implications from the adoption of sustainable development on the global and multi-national scales have been discussed.

(*) The Oceans/Océans programme was designed by A. Vallega on the basis of his extended paper "Agenda 21 for Ocean Geography " and with the support of the Declaration Geography within the ocean science and facing ocean sustainable development. It was adopted as a conclusion of a special session of the 27th International Geographical Congress (The Hague, The Netherlands, 1996). The programme was approved by the IGU General Assembly (August 1996) and was formally adopted by the IGU Executive Committee in November 1996.
7.3 International Centre for Coastal and Ocean Policy Studies (ICCOPS) and co-operation with the United Nations
In 1992 A. Vallega served as the scientific co-ordinator of the International Conference Ocean Management in Global Change, convened in Genoa, June 1992, with the co-operation of the UN Office for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (UN OALOS), as the main event of the Celebrations of the Quincentenary of the Discovery of the Americas. Moving from a resolution adopted by the Conference participants, A. Vallega worked out the project of the International Centre for Coastal and Ocean Policy Studies (ICCOPS), of which was the founder and the first president (1992-1994). ICCOPS was recognised as a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), then he was included in the NGOs roster of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development and acquired the consultative status to the Barcelona Convention. In this framework, A. Vallega co-operated with the UN system as presented in Table 5.
